Jeannine Aversa: Cheerleader For A Recession

More bad journalism is the result of the left-wing media's latest attempt to talk the nation into a recession. Here we see AP's Jeannine Aversa throwing the word around very loosely, just as Sen. Obama did last week.

WASHINGTON (AP) -"It's no longer a question of recession or not. Now it's how deep and how long. Workers' pink slips stacked ever higher in March as jittery employers slashed 80,000 jobs, the most in five years, and the national unemployment rate climbed to 5.1 percent. Job losses are nearing the staggering level of a quarter-million this year in just three months."

For the benefit of Ms. Aversa, let's once again go over the definition of the term "recession."

A recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. We are not even positive that we have had one such quarter as of yet.

Aversa's lack of consideration for the facts in her reporting is a bit disheartening to this aspiring journalist but perhaps the AP will reprimand her and suggest that next time she try to appear a bit less jubilant in regard to the prospect of a severe economic slowdown.

Does it even really matter what we call it? When oil hits $120 a barrel (not a "left-wing media" plot but a cold, hard reality) and many families are scrambling to make ends meet because our ENTIRE economy depends on oil to make it run and when the price of oil goes up the price of things like food go up as well, then we can call it a recession or a slowdown or whatever you want, but it still doesn't make hungry people feel any better to know that you've nailed the term more accurately.

I'm not talking in the abstract here, as a divorced father I can tell you my paycheck doesn't cover what it used to. I'm barely getting by, and it's by no fault of my own. Try living in my shoes for a week and you'll see what it's like.

YOU can call it anything you want, but as a journalist, Aversa has a responsibility to report the story accurately, and "recession" is a technical term.

It's like a weather man saying that there are "freezing" tempratures outside, when the temp might be really really cold, but still not below 32 degrees.

I just noticed today that Warren Buffet said that "...the recession will be longer and deeper than most people think. This will not be short and shallow."

I guess that just because Warren Buffet isn't an economist we shouldn't agree with him, either. Not that the richest man in the world knows anything about money or the economy......

Don't worry "Anonymous", come mid-November I'm sure everything will turn much rosier for your pocketbook. Reminds me of 1992, when all we heard all election year was woeful tales of how bad the economy was by our 'unbiased' press corps. Of course as soon as Bill Clinton was elected, all those unbiased news reporters suddenly felt much happier about the economy....and the FACTS quietly released throughout 1993 proved that, surprise, things weren't nearly as bad as we were all led to believe during the election year, and our economy had actually started growing in 1992 while BUSH was still president. Oh well, might as well give Bill all the credit even though he had not yet offered any legislation or other significant policy action. He just made us feel better....sort of like Obama.

Doug, looks like you called it at the beginning of the year. The media has trashed this economy all the way to the election.

Yeesh, how old is this article. So many WRONG opinions. People should just can it.

Anyhow, what got me goat is all the reporting about job loss without any mention of freelancers. NYC's workforce for instance is greatly populated with freelance estimated at nearly at 2.5 million workers.

Our jobs didn't have to get cut, the phone just stopped ringing. It generally worse than the reports.

Jeannine Aversa is the classic "sky is falling" extremist. It's blatantly obvious that it is done for the greatest impact. And Aversa's comments are the equivalent of pouring gasoline on a fire or yelling FIRE in a crowded theatre. This reporter is despicable in the sensationalism she writes.

How'd that work out for you?

Are you still claiming that we aren't in a recession?

Still blaming lib doomsayers for putting us into a recession?

You are a clown.
